Treatment of TMJ
So a major goal of treatment of the TMJ is to restore normal movement of the jaw. But many aspects of treatment must be addressed before that goal can be reached. These will be discussed in the various sections of this chapter.
The first aspect of treatment is the promotion of healing by reducing pain and muscle spasm. This can easily be provided by using tramadol. The second aspect of treatment is the restoration of normal range of motion in both quality and quantity, to the jaw, neck, shoulder, and any other joint of the body that may be contributing to the pain. This includes restoring motion to a system called the craniosacral system which includes the sutures (joints) of the cranium (head).
The third aspect of treatment is the improvement of the overall posture, of the body and specifically the forward head posture. The fourth aspect of treatment includes restoring normal physiological functioning to the head and neck areas. This is accomplished through establishing normal tongue position, improving the breathing pattern, improving swallowing, and through various body awareness exercises. The fifth aspect of treatment is education in proper body mechanics to minimize reoccurence of the problem. Since muscle is considered to be a prime factor in contributing to TMJ this is where our discussion will begin.
